DPG MEDIA SELLS DANISH BERLINGSKE MEDIA
Tak for samarbejdet, kolleger!
In December 2024, DPG Media sold Berlingske Media to the Norwegian media group Amedia. The sale of the Danish publisher, which employs almost 500 people and is known for authoritative news brands such as Berlingske, B.T., Weekendavisen and Euroinvestor, was an unusual decision for DPG Media.
As CEO of Amedia, Norway’s largest news publisher, Anders Opdahl sees the acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen his company’s position in the Nordic markets.
“Scandinavian media companies are facing tougher global competition and profound digital changes,” Opdahl explains. “They’re competing with tech giants for revenue and reach. In this challenging landscape, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for news media to fulfil their purpose, which is to promote vibrant democracy through free speech and independent journalism. This means that closer cooperation will be crucial to securing our future, making Amedia and Berlingske Media a perfect match.”
Christian Van Thillo, executive chairman of DPG Media, recognises the need for consolidation. “The digital transformation of Berlingske Media’s titles has been very successful so far. But like all publishers, the company needs to scale up to accelerate its digital development in today’s challenging market. With this in mind, we first explored various consolidation opportunities ourselves, engaging with several major publishers. It turned out that Amedia also saw the need to scale up, and that they had a clear ambition to expand their reach in the Nordic countries. After careful consideration, we came to the conclusion that Amedia, as a highly successful and digitally oriented publisher, would be a great home for Berlingske Media. That’s how this sale came about at the end of 2024.”
Van Thillo explains that selling such strong news titles was a difficult and unusual decision for DPG Media. “But we’re convinced that this puts Berlingske Media in the best possible hands,” he adds, “and that’s what really matters for its future development. We would like to thank the people at Berlingske Media for 10 great years, and we wish them all the best. Tak for samarbejdet, kolleger!”
